Duromax XP12000EH Generator Details

The Duromax XP12000EH has a full outlet panel for home backup, job sites and RVs. It includes a 120V 3-prong NEMA 5-20 receptacle, a 120V L5-30 twist lock, a 120/240V L14-30 4-prong twist lock and a 120/240V NEMA 14-50 receptacle. A resettable circuit breaker protects the unit from overload, a volt meter shows the output voltage, and a ground terminal accepts a No. 12 AWG stranded copper wire run to a copper or brass grounding rod.

Duromax's Power Boost Technology works through a voltage selector switch that changes how the dual 120V windings are connected. In the 120V ONLY position, the switch doubles the available 120V amperage and balances the load automatically. Use the 120/240V position when a 240V appliance is plugged in. Only move the switch with the main breaker OFF, because changing it under load can seriously damage the generator. In 120/240V mode, keep the load balanced across both sides of the circuit. An unbalanced load makes the breaker trip sooner.

The Auto Throttle lowers engine speed when nothing is drawing power, which saves fuel and cuts noise. The key switch has three positions (Start, Run and Off) and is powered by a 12V 7Ah battery. The easy-pull recoil start works as a backup. Don't run the starter motor for more than 5 seconds at a time. If the engine doesn't start, wait 10 seconds before trying again. An automatic low-oil shutoff protects the engine from damage.

To run on propane, turn the gasoline valve to horizontal (off), then connect the supplied hose's ACME nut to the tank. The regulator needs an LPG source of at least 3 PSI. Only plug in devices once the engine is running smoothly, because leftover gasoline in the carburetor can make it run unevenly for a few minutes. Never have both fuels on at the same time. To stop the generator on propane, turn off the loads first, then the main breaker, then the LPG supply, and finally turn the key to OFF.

Use SAE 10W-30 oil and fresh unleaded gasoline rated 87 octane or higher. Leave at least 1.5 in of space at the top of the tank. The fuel gauge may not register below about one third of a tank. The manual recommends an F6RTC spark plug (for example, NGK BPR5ES) gapped at 0.7–0.8 mm (0.028–0.031 in). Above 5,000 ft, a dealer should modify the carburetor. Even with that change, engine power drops by about 3.5% for every 1,000 ft of altitude.

For maintenance, the oiled foam air filter can be washed, and the fuel filter cup can be removed for cleaning. The oil drain plug takes a 10 mm wrench. Inspect the carbon brushes every 250 running hours. The AVR (automatic voltage regulator) can be replaced if overheating or overload damages it. The box includes a double-sided screwdriver, spanners, a spark plug wrench, an oil funnel with hose, DC charging cables and plug ends. The wheel kit is optional. Duromax gives a 3-year residential parts warranty (1 year for commercial use) and a 2-year emissions warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Duromax XP12000EH Generator, and we answer them below.

What oil should I use in the Duromax XP12000EH and how much does it need?
The manual recommends SAE 10W-30. The crankcase holds 37 fl oz (1.1 L). The generator ships with no oil, so fill it before the first start. Don't use oils with additives or 2-stroke oils.

What type of gasoline is required?
Use fresh unleaded gasoline rated 87 octane or higher. Don't use gasoline older than 30 days or an oil/gas mix. Always leave at least 1.5 in of space at the top of the tank.

How long will the generator run on a full tank?
At 50% load it runs about 10 hours on its 7.9-gallon gasoline tank and about 5 hours on a 5-gallon propane tank.

How much power does it produce on propane?
On propane it delivers 8075 running watts and 10200 surge watts. On gasoline it delivers 9500 running watts and 12000 surge watts.

What does the Power Boost voltage selector switch do?
It changes how the dual 120V windings are connected. The 120V ONLY position doubles the 120V amperage. The 120/240V position is needed for 240V appliances. Only change it with the main breaker OFF.

What receptacles are on the control panel?
The panel has a NEMA 5-20 120V outlet, an L5-30 120V twist lock, an L14-30 120/240V twist lock, a NEMA 14-50 120/240V receptacle, and 12V DC charging posts.

Can I use the 12V DC output to jump-start a car?
No. The DC posts are only for recharging 12V automotive-type batteries. The manual warns never to try jump-starting a vehicle with the generator.

What propane supply pressure does the regulator need?
The propane regulator is designed for an LPG source of 3 PSI or more. The tank connects through the supplied hose with an ACME nut.

Which spark plug does the XP12000EH use?
Use an F6RTC spark plug, such as the NGK BPR5ES, gapped at 0.7–0.8 mm (0.028–0.031 in).

How often should the carbon brushes be inspected?
The carbon brushes wear over time and should be inspected every 250 running hours. Replace them by removing the generator's back cover.

Does the generator need adjustments for high altitude?
Yes. If you always run it above 5,000 ft (1,500 m), have a dealer modify the carburetor. Don't run a modified carburetor below 5,000 ft, because it can overheat the engine.

What warranty does Duromax offer on this model?
Duromax gives the original buyer a 3-year parts warranty for residential use and 1 year for commercial or heavy use. The emissions control system is covered for two years.
