Duromax XP13000EH Generator Details
The XP13000EH is a dual fuel generator that runs on either gasoline or propane. You choose the fuel with a rotary fuel switch on the left front panel: clockwise for GAS, counter-clockwise for Propane, and a third position for Storage. The propane inlet sits to the right of the switch and supplies regulated LPG to the engine. It connects to the tank through a standard ACME nut fitting. The manual stresses that one fuel must always be shut off while the other is in use.
The generator starts with a push button engine switch. Press it for 1 second to start the engine, and hold it for 3 seconds to stop it. You must turn on the battery switch first, and switching it off also keeps the battery from draining in storage. An Easy Pull recoil starter is available as a backup. Never run the starter motor for more than 5 seconds at a time; if the engine doesn't start, wait 10 seconds before trying again. A charging light shows when the battery is charging, and a low oil alert lights after an automatic low-oil shutdown.
The idle control lowers engine RPM when nothing is drawing power, which saves fuel and reduces noise. The engine returns to full speed when a load is applied. This works well for intermittent loads such as power tools and air compressors. Keep idle control off during warm-up, and never use it for backup house power, because it causes large swings in voltage and frequency. The digital multimeter uses the MODE button to show voltage, frequency, resettable running hours and total hours.
The power panel is protected by a main circuit breaker, and each receptacle has its own circuit protector. The 20A outlet also has GFCI protection. In 120/240V mode, spread the load evenly across both sides, because uneven loading makes the breaker trip sooner. Plug 240V devices into the 240V receptacles only. The manual warns against connecting 50Hz or three-phase loads. It also says the unit should not power sensitive electronics without a separate power conditioner. A cord table helps you choose the right wire gauge for each amperage and cord length.
Setup starts with removing the orange metal shipping brace and the wooden brace, followed by the optional wheel kit, support legs and handles. The frame must be grounded to an earth rod. Routine maintenance includes checking the oil before each use, washing and re-oiling the foam air cleaner, cleaning the fuel filter cup and inspecting the spark plug. Inspect the carbon brushes every 250 running hours. Owners can replace both the brushes and the AVR themselves. For regular use above 5,000 feet, the manual recommends having a dealer modify the carburetor.
How you store the generator depends on how long it will sit unused. For more than 30 days, drain the tank and the carburetor, pour 2 tablespoons of 10W-30 oil into the cylinder, and keep the battery on a tender indoors. Gasoline older than 30 days can damage the fuel system. The emissions control system has a separate two-year warranty. The package includes a double-sided screwdriver, spanner wrenches, a spark plug wrench, an oil funnel with hose, and plug ends for making your own cords.
