Honda GX270 Engine Details
The Honda GX270 owner's manual covers the engine that powers many generators and other equipment. Some types include an Oil Alert system. It stops the engine automatically before the crankcase oil drops below a safe level, and the engine switch stays in the ON position. If the engine stops and will not restart, Honda says to check the oil level before looking for other causes. Checking the oil before each start also helps you avoid an unexpected shutdown during work.
On models with electric start, a circuit protector guards the battery charging circuit. A short circuit or a battery connected with reverse polarity trips it, and a green indicator pops out. Find and fix the cause before you push the button to reset it. A fuse also protects the starter relay and charging circuits. If the fuse burns out, you can still start the engine by hand with the recoil starter, but running the engine will not charge the battery.
To start the engine, turn the fuel valve ON. Close the choke for a cold start, set the throttle about 1/3 of the way toward MAX, and turn the engine switch ON. Then pull the starter grip gently until you feel resistance, and pull briskly. Do not run the electric starter for more than 5 seconds at a time. Wait at least 10 seconds before trying again, or the starter motor can overheat.
The maintenance schedule calls for an oil change after the first month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours. Clean the air cleaner every 3 months or 50 hours. Check the spark plug every 6 months or 100 hours and replace it every year or 300 hours. The dealer should clean the combustion chamber every 500 hours and check the fuel tube every 2 years. The air cleaner comes in several types: standard dual-element, cyclone, oil-bath, single-element and low-profile.
When cleaning a paper filter, never use compressed air above 207 kPa (30 psi). Wash foam filters, soak them in clean engine oil, and squeeze out the excess. If the engine has a spark arrester, clean it every 100 hours. If you always run the engine above 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), the carburetor needs a modification for high altitude. Even with the modification, power drops about 3.5% for every 300 meters of altitude.
Before storing the engine, add a fuel stabilizer or drain the tank and carburetor, because fuel can deteriorate in as little as 30 days. Pour 5–10 cc of oil into the cylinder. Then pull the starter slowly until the valves close, so moisture cannot get into the cylinder. Before transporting the engine, let it cool for at least 15 minutes. Keep it level and turn the fuel valve OFF. The throttle and choke levers have holes for optional remote control cables.
