Honda GX690 Engine Details
The Honda GX690 is the top model in Honda's GX630, GX660 and GX690 V-twin family, and one owner's manual covers all three. A key protective feature is the Oil Alert system (applicable types). If the crankcase oil level gets close to the safe limit, a red indicator lights up and the system stops the engine automatically. The engine switch stays in the ON position when this happens. If the engine stops and will not restart, Honda says to check the oil level before looking for other causes.
The engine has a fuel-cut solenoid that lets fuel reach the carburetor main jet only when the switch is at ON or START. The solenoid needs battery power, so the battery must stay connected whenever the engine runs. If you disconnect it, the fuel flow stops and the engine shuts down. Some versions also have an hour meter. It counts only actual running time, not time with the switch at ON, which helps commercial users track maintenance intervals.
The GX690 comes in several configurations. Muffler options include two high-mount types (A and B) and a side-mount type. Fan covers come as a protector type, a screen grid type or a PTO type. The wiring diagrams show four electrical layouts: a 2.7 A or 17 A charge coil, each with or without a control box. The throttle and choke levers have holes for remote control cables, so you can fit either solid or braided cables on the left or right side.
To start a cold engine, pull the choke knob to CLOSED and move the throttle about one third of the way toward MAX. Then turn the switch to START. Do not run the starter for more than 5 seconds at a time, and wait at least 10 seconds before trying again so the starter motor does not overheat. Let the engine warm up for 2 or 3 minutes while you gradually open the choke. To stop it normally, move the throttle to MIN., turn the switch to OFF, and close the fuel valve if there is one.
Under the maintenance schedule, change the oil after the first month or 20 hours, and replace the oil filter every 200 hours. Clean the spark arrester (optional) every 100 hours, and clean the combustion chamber every 1,000 hours. The air cleaner has two elements: a paper element that you can clean with compressed air up to 207 kPa (30 psi), and a foam element that you wash, soak in engine oil and squeeze out. Use an oil filter socket instead of a strap wrench so you don't damage the oil pressure switch.
Fuel may contain up to 10% ethanol (E10) or 5% methanol. Above 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), a dealer should modify the carburetor because the standard mixture runs too rich. Even with the modification, power drops about 3.5% for every 300 meters of altitude. Don't run a modified carburetor below 1,500 meters, because the lean mixture can overheat the engine.
Before storage, add a fuel stabilizer and run the engine for 10 minutes, or drain the tank and the carburetor through its drain screw. Pour 5–10 cc of oil into each cylinder, recharge the battery once a month, and let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes before transporting it.
