Honda EU2000i Generator Details
The Honda EU2000i is a compact inverter generator that includes the Eco-Throttle system. When this switch is ON, the engine automatically slows down when loads are reduced, turned off or disconnected, and speeds back up when appliances are reconnected. This lowers fuel consumption and noise. Honda recommends turning the system OFF when several high loads are connected at the same time, when using tools that switch on and off quickly, when using the DC output, and when starting appliances that need a lot of power at startup.
Several controls on the panel let you monitor the generator. A green output indicator light shows normal power delivery. If the load goes above 2,000 VA or a connected appliance has a short circuit, the red overload indicator light comes on. About four seconds later, the output is cut and the green light goes off. A brief red light when an electric motor starts is normal. If the red light stays on, the manual says to contact a Honda dealer.
The Oil Alert system stops the engine before the oil level in the crankcase falls below a safe limit, and a red indicator light comes on. The engine switch stays in the ON position when this happens. Separate push-button AC and DC circuit protectors trip when there is a short circuit or overload. The DC receptacle is for charging 12-volt automotive batteries only and is used with an optional charging cable. Do not start the vehicle while the cable is connected.
Two EU2000i units can run in parallel operation through dedicated outlets and an optional Honda-approved parallel kit. Never connect different generator models, and never connect or remove the kit while the engines are running. Remove the kit before running a single generator. A ground terminal connects to the frame and to the ground terminals of the receptacles. The system ground is not connected to the AC neutral wire, so a receptacle tester will not show the same result as a household outlet.
For high-altitude operation above 5,000 feet (1,500 meters), a dealer should modify the carburetor. Even after this modification, horsepower drops about 3.5% for every 1,000 feet (300 meters) of altitude gain. Running a modified carburetor below 5,000 feet can overheat the engine and cause serious damage. The engine uses a vacuum-operated fuel pump, so the first start, or a start after running out of fuel, may take extra pulls of the starter grip.
The manual also covers starting procedures. Close the choke for a cold start and open it gradually as the engine warms up. Wait 2 to 3 minutes before turning on the Eco-Throttle. Move the generator at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from the fueling area before starting it. During operation, keep the generator at least 3 feet (1 meter) from buildings. California models have a tethered fuel cap that you tighten until it clicks. Keep the vent lever OFF for storage and transport.
The maintenance schedule calls for an oil level check before each use and service of the spark arrester every 100 hours. A dealer should check valve clearance and clean the combustion chamber after every 300 hours, and the fuel line should be checked every two years. For storage longer than one month, add gasoline stabilizer or drain the fuel through the carburetor drain screw. For storage longer than six months, the manual also says to put a tablespoon of oil into the cylinder.
The Distributor's Limited Warranty covers the engine for 24 months. Generator electrical and frame components are covered for 24 months for noncommercial use and 12 months for commercial or rental use. A separate Emission Control System Warranty covers emission-related parts for two years. Engines certified for California carry an Air Index hang tag, which you should remove before operating the generator.
