Ideal Logic Max Combi C30 Boiler Details

The Ideal Logic Max Combi C30 is a wall-mounted condensing boiler that provides central heating and instantaneous domestic hot water from one compact casing. It comes fully assembled with a DHW plate heat exchanger, diverter valve, circulating pump, pressure gauge, pressure relief valve and expansion vessel. The Ideal System Filter is in the box, and fitting it correctly is a warranty condition. An automatic bypass, preformed copper tails, a pre-wired mains lead and a built-in filling loop with a green handle make installation simpler.

A key feature is the DHW preheat function, which ships switched off to save gas. When set to On, the boiler fires now and then to keep the plate heat exchanger warm. Preheating starts when the flow temperature drops 15ºC below the DHW target. It stops at 5ºC below the target or after 3 minutes, and runs no more than once every 30 minutes. The Timed setting turns on intelligent preheat. It learns your hot water usage over 7 days and preheats only in the periods when you are likely to need hot water.

Intelligent Load Optimisation reduces short cycling. If the flow temperature reaches the CH target plus 4ºC during a heating demand, the boiler switches off. When it relights, it drops to minimum rate over 60 seconds and stays there for 10 minutes. Normal operation resumes after those 10 minutes, or once the heating demand has been off for more than an hour. Turning the heating knob to the leaf symbol keeps the boiler condensing, and lowering the room thermostat by 1ºC can cut gas use by up to 10%.

The large colour screen and simple controls show the boiler's status, cycling through up to three messages at a time. Fault screens give clear steps for problems such as Ignition Lockout, Low Water Pressure, Overheat Lockout and Blocked Flue/Condensate. The menu includes fault help, fault history, sensor readings and a vent system routine. After one year, a Service Due reminder appears with the service contact number that was set during commissioning.

Built-in protection includes frost protection, which fires the boiler if the water drops below 5ºC, as long as the mains power stays on. The pump and diverter valve are exercised every 24 hours. The siphonic condensate trap makes a frozen condensate pipe less likely. If the pipe does freeze, the manual explains how to thaw it safely with warm water or heat packs, never boiling water.

The boiler works with Ideal's Halo controls. Pairing it with a Halo Combi Wi-Fi thermostat raises the ErP rating from A to A+ through load compensation, geolocation and Met Office weather data. It also supports the Halo Lite wired OpenTherm thermostat and a weather compensation outdoor sensor, part 216119. The PRT3 RF thermostat is not compatible. QR codes in the manual link to how-to videos, and every part can be serviced from the front.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal Logic Max Combi C30 Boiler, and we answer them below.

How much hot water can the Ideal Logic Max Combi C30 deliver?
The C30 delivers 12.4 l/min of hot water at a 35ºC temperature rise, with a maximum DHW output of 30.3 kW. It keeps working at flow rates as low as 2 l/min.

What pressure should my boiler system be at?
When the system is cold, the gauge should read 1 to 1.5 bar. The boiler will not run if the pressure falls below 0.3 bar, and the working pressure should never go above 2.5 bar.

How do I top up the system pressure?
First make sure the blue and green handles are closed. Remove the plug and cap, then connect the filling loop to the DHW inlet. Turn the blue handle horizontal, then slowly turn the green filling loop handle horizontal until the gauge reads 1 to 1.5 bar. Close both handles again, disconnect the loop and refit the cap and plug.

What is the difference between Preheat On and Preheat Timed?
With Preheat On, the boiler keeps the hot water heat exchanger warm all the time. With Preheat Timed, it learns your hot water use over 7 days and preheats only when you are likely to need hot water, which saves gas.

What should I do if the display shows Ignition Lockout?
Check that your other gas appliances work, then press Restart. In cold weather, a frozen condensate pipe can also cause this fault. If the lockout keeps coming back, contact a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

How do I thaw a frozen condensate pipe?
Find the frozen section, usually at the most exposed point outside. Apply a hot water bottle, a microwaveable heat pack, a warm damp cloth or warm water from a watering can. Never use boiling water. Once the condensate flows freely again, restart the boiler.

Does the boiler protect itself against frost?
Yes. The boiler fires if the water inside it drops below 5ºC, but only while the mains power is on. This does not protect the rest of the heating system.

Can the Logic Max Combi C30 run on LPG?
The boiler is supplied for natural gas (G20). An LPG conversion kit is available for all outputs. The conversion must be done by a qualified engineer following the kit's instructions.

Which smart controls are compatible with this boiler?
It works with the Ideal Halo RF, Halo Wi-Fi, Halo Lite OpenTherm thermostat, the Halo 2-Zone kit and the weather compensation sensor. The PRT3 RF thermostat (part 216131) is not compatible.

What clearances are needed around the boiler?
For servicing, allow 165 mm above, 100 mm below, 2.5 mm at the sides and 450 mm at the front. Inside a cupboard, the front clearance can be 5 mm to the door, as long as 450 mm is available when the door is open.

How often does the boiler need servicing?
A Gas Safe Registered Engineer should service it at least once a year. After one year, the display shows a Service Due message, which you can clear by pressing Restart.

What is the maximum flue length for the C30?
The maximum effective flue length is 8 m horizontally and 7.5 m vertically. Each 90º elbow counts as 1 m and each 45º elbow as 0.6 m.

Why does the pump run when there is no heating demand?
The pump runs briefly once every 24 hours as a self-check to stop it from seizing. This is normal.
