Ideal Logic System S15 Boiler Details

The Ideal Logic System2 S15 is a compact system boiler designed for fully pumped, sealed central heating systems with a separate hot water cylinder. It arrives fully assembled with a circulating pump, pressure gauge, pressure relief valve and expansion vessel already built in, so installers need fewer external components. It uses full sequence automatic spark ignition and fan-assisted combustion, and a single dual-purpose electrode handles both ignition and flame detection. Ideal says the boiler is designed, developed and made in the UK.

The front of the boiler has a simple set of controls: a Temperature Knob, a Mode button, a Restart button, the system pressure gauge and a high-resolution status display. The display uses clear icons and text, and the flame symbol shows when the burner is lit. Pressing Mode switches the boiler between ON and OFF. If a lockout code beginning with L appears, you can reset the boiler with the Restart button. If it fails to light after five attempts, it shows the L 02 ignition lockout code.

Frost protection works in every mode as long as the boiler has mains power. If the water inside the boiler falls below 5°C, the burner fires and runs until the water reaches 19°C. The pump also runs briefly once every 24 hours as a self-check, which stops it from seizing during long idle periods. For these features to work, the boiler must be wired to a permanent live supply. Ideal states that the warranty is invalid if it is not.

When an outside weather sensor is connected, the temperature knob sets the target room temperature between 10°C and 30°C instead of a flow temperature. Water sent to the cylinder is then factory-set to 80°C. The boiler can also be set up for 2x Switched Live operation through the installer menu, with separate central heating and hot water demand inputs. It supports OpenTherm controls, Ideal's Halo thermostats and the Link remote monitoring solution.

A feature called Intelligent Load Optimisation reduces short cycling. If the flow temperature rises 4°C above the heating target, the burner turns off. When it relights, it drops to minimum rate over 60 seconds and stays there for 10 minutes. Ideal also notes that turning the room thermostat down by 1°C can cut gas use by up to 10%.

The siphonic condensate trap lowers the risk of the drain freezing. If the external pipe does freeze, the boiler makes a gurgling noise and then locks out. The user guide explains how to thaw the pipe safely with warm water or a heat pack, and warns never to use boiling water. Condensate pipework must be plastic, with at least 19 mm internal diameter indoors and 30 mm outdoors. Horizontal runs must fall at least 52 mm per metre.

The installer mode is opened by holding Mode and Restart together for more than five seconds. It shows the last three faults and lets the engineer run the burner at maximum or minimum rate, start a five-minute venting cycle, and set the minimum pump speed. The boiler must be serviced at least once a year by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. The service includes CO and CO2 checks, with a CO/CO2 ratio limit of 0.004.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal Logic System S15 Boiler, and we answer them below.

How do I start the Ideal Logic System S15 boiler?
Switch on the electricity and check that the programmer and thermostats are on. If OFF is shown at the bottom of the screen, press the Mode button so that ON appears. Then turn the Temperature Knob until 80°C is shown.

What does the L 02 code mean?
L 02 is an ignition lockout. It means the boiler failed to light after five attempts. Check the condensate pipe for blockages and make sure your gas supply is working, then press Restart. If the fault comes back, contact a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

What does F 01 mean on the display?
F 01 means low water pressure. The pressure gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar. Re-pressurise the system to 1 bar using the filling loop, close the tap and press Restart.

At what pressure will the boiler stop working?
The boiler will not operate if the system pressure falls below 0.3 bar. If you have to top up the pressure regularly, there may be a leak, and an engineer should check the system.

Can the S15 model be converted to LPG?
No. According to the product data sheet, LPG conversion is available for the 18, 24 and 30 kW models but not for the 15 kW model.

How do I thaw a frozen condensate pipe?
Find the frozen section, which is usually at the most exposed outdoor point, a bend or a dip. Apply a hot water bottle, a microwaveable heat pack or warm water to it. Never use boiling water. Once the condensate flows freely, restart the boiler.

Does the boiler have frost protection?
Yes. If the boiler water falls below 5°C, the boiler fires and runs until it reaches 19°C. This only works if the boiler has permanent mains power. It does not protect every part of the heating system.

What is L 0C?
L 0C means the boiler has been reset five times within 15 minutes. Turn the electrical supply off and back on. If the boiler still does not work, contact Ideal or a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

How much space does the boiler need around it?
For servicing, it needs 165 mm above, 100 mm below, 2.5 mm at each side and 450 mm at the front. The bottom clearance can be reduced after installation if a removable panel is fitted. Inside a cupboard, the door can be as close as 5 mm, as long as there is 450 mm of clearance when the door is open.

How often should the boiler be serviced?
The boiler should be serviced at least once a year by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer, and the Benchmark service record must be completed after each service. Skipping servicing can invalidate the warranty.

Can I install the boiler in a bathroom?
Yes, but it must be installed outside Zone 2 as defined in BS 7671. The boiler is rated IP20, so it must not be cleaned with jets of water.

How should I clean the boiler casing?
Dust it with a dry cloth. For stubborn marks, wipe with a damp cloth and then dry it. Do not use abrasive cleaning materials.

Which water treatment products are approved?
Ideal recommends SCALEMASTER SM-1 PRO, FERNOX, MBI, ADEY MC1, SENTINEL X100 or CALMAG CM100 inhibitors. The heat exchanger is aluminium, so the system must not be filled with artificially softened water.
