Victron Multiplus 3000 Inverter Charger Details

The Victron MultiPlus 3000 puts a true sine wave inverter, an adaptive battery charger and a high-speed automatic transfer switch in one aluminium case. If the grid or generator fails, the unit switches to inverter operation fast enough that computers and other sensitive electronics keep running, so it works as a UPS. The main output stays powered without interruption. The auxiliary output only carries power while an external AC source is present, so it suits loads such as water heaters that should never drain the battery.

PowerControl lets you set a maximum input current. The MultiPlus then accounts for other AC loads and uses only the spare current for charging. PowerAssist takes this a step further: when a load needs more than the shore or generator supply can deliver, the inverter adds battery power to cover the gap. When demand drops, the spare power goes back into recharging the battery. This lets high-power appliances run on a limited shore connection, and it also means a smaller generator can be installed.

The charger uses an adaptive four-stage process: bulk, absorption, float and storage. After a shallow discharge, absorption is kept short. After a deep discharge, it is extended automatically. BatterySafe mode limits how fast the voltage rises once the gassing voltage is reached. Storage mode starts after 24 hours without a discharge and raises the voltage back to absorption level once a week to help prevent stratification and sulphation. A voltage sense connection compensates for voltage loss in the cables.

The front switch has three positions: On, Off and Charger only. Use Charger only when you don't need the inverter, so it can't drain the battery if mains power is lost. A specific toggle sequence on the switch starts equalisation or forced absorption. Equalisation charges for one hour at 1 V above absorption (2 V for 24 V systems), with the current limited to one quarter of the set value. Disconnect sensitive DC loads first, because they may not tolerate this higher voltage.

When solar inverters are connected to the AC output, frequency shift raises the output frequency by 1 Hz once absorption voltage is reached. This switches the solar inverters off until the battery voltage drops slightly. An optional built-in battery monitor can start and stop a generator based on state of charge, battery voltage, load level or completion of the bulk phase. If bulk charging lasts more than 10 hours, Bulk protection stops the charger, because a charge that long can point to a fault such as a shorted battery cell.

Basic settings, including parallel and three-phase operation, can be changed with DIP switches. A VE.Net panel, VictronConnect or VEConfigure through an MK3-USB interface gives full access to every setting. Front-panel LEDs show the inverter, charger and alarm status. In parallel or three-phase systems, they also flash VE.Bus OK codes and error codes. Maintenance is limited to checking the connections once a year and keeping the unit clean, dry and free of oil, soot and vapours.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Victron Multiplus 3000 Inverter Charger, and we answer them below.

What is the difference between the 12/3000/120 and the 24/3000/70 models?
The 12/3000/120 model runs on a 12 V battery (9.5 to 17 V DC input) and charges at up to 120 A. The 24/3000/70 model runs on a 24 V battery (19 to 33 V DC input) and charges at up to 70 A. Both deliver 3000 VA continuous and 6000 W peak at 120 VAC.

Why is there no voltage on the auxiliary output (AC-out-2)?
The auxiliary output only carries power while an external AC source is connected. When the MultiPlus is in inverter mode, this output is switched off on purpose so its loads don't drain the battery.

How many units can be connected in parallel or in three-phase?
You can parallel up to 6 units. Three units can be set up for three-phase output, and with up to 6 units per phase a system can reach 45 kW / 54 kVA. Two units can also be stacked to provide 120-0-120 V split phase.

Why does the charger not operate even though AC is connected?
The AC input may be outside 95 to 140 VAC or outside the set frequency range (45 to 65 Hz by default). Other possible causes are a tripped input breaker, a blown battery fuse, or heavily distorted generator power. For distorted generator power, turn on the WeakAC and dynamic current limiter settings.

What does it mean when the Bulk LED flashes and the Mains on LED is lit?
This means Bulk protection mode is active: the maximum bulk charging time of 10 hours has been exceeded. Check your batteries. You can reset the unit by switching it off and on again. Bulk protection can only be turned off with VEConfigure.

How do I activate equalisation or forced absorption?
Make sure the charger is in Float and that all switches are set to On. Switch quickly from On to Charger only, then back to On, then to Charger only again, holding each position for ½ to 2 seconds. After the Bulk, Absorption and Float LEDs flash 5 times, set the switch to On while the Bulk LED is lit to start equalisation, or while the Absorption LED is lit to start forced absorption.

What do the Low battery and Overload LEDs flashing simultaneously mean?
The ripple voltage on the DC connection is above 1.5 Vrms. Check the battery cables and connections, and make sure the battery capacity is large enough. If both LEDs stay lit, the inverter has shut down. Fit shorter or thicker cables or a larger battery bank, then reset the unit.

Can the MultiPlus 3000 work with lithium-ion batteries?
Yes. Its two general purpose communication ports can be used to communicate with the BMS of a lithium-ion battery, and the charging parameters can be set for different battery types.

Why does charging current drop to zero when absorption begins?
The battery may be over-heated (above 50 °C), or the battery temperature sensor may be faulty. Unplug the sensor. If charging works normally again after about one minute, replace the sensor.

What maintenance does the MultiPlus require?
No specific maintenance is needed. Check all connections once a year, and keep the unit clean and away from moisture, oil, soot and vapours.

How can I configure and monitor the MultiPlus 3000?
Basic settings can be changed with DIP switches. A VE.Net panel, the VictronConnect app or VEConfigure through an MK3-USB interface gives access to all settings. For remote monitoring, use a Digital Multi Control panel, a VE.Bus Smart Dongle, or a GX device such as Cerbo GX together with the VRM Portal.
