Predator 9000 Generator Details
The Predator 9000 Generator has a built-in carbon monoxide shutoff sensor. A flashing red light means dangerous CO levels have built up and the generator will shut down. A continuously flashing yellow light means the sensor has a fault and needs service before you use the unit again. A single yellow flash right after starting is normal and confirms the self-check passed. The manual says the sensor is only an extra layer of protection. Run the unit outdoors, at least 20 feet from structures, with the exhaust pointed away.
Before each use, test the GFCI receptacles with the engine running. Press Test, check that the Reset button pops out and cuts power, then press Reset. After every start, let the engine run with no load for five minutes so it can stabilize. For cold starts, set the choke to START, then move it slowly to RUN. A fast move can stall the engine. When using electric start, crank for no more than 5 seconds at a time and wait one minute between attempts.
The break-in has two stages. During the first 3 hours of use, avoid heavy loads. After about 20 hours, change the engine oil. Plug in loads in this order: highest-wattage items first, then inductive loads, then lights. Voltage-sensitive devices go last, through a UL-listed surge protector. If you skip this order, the warranty is void. Loads between rated and maximum power can run for no more than 30 minutes. Spreading loads across the outlets helps you reach full rated output.
To size your loads, add up the running watts of everything you plan to use. The total must stay under 7,250 W. Then add the single largest start-up surge, and that total must stay under 9,000 W. The manual includes wattage estimate charts for emergency, job site, household, lawn and garden, and HVAC equipment. It also has an extension cord gauge table that covers loads up to 40 A and cords up to 100 ft. The generator is not meant for sensitive electronics unless you add a line conditioner and a surge protector.
Above 3000 feet, you must install a high-altitude kit, or the warranty is void. The kit includes main jets for 3000–6000 ft and 6000–8000 ft, plus new bolt, fuel cup and solenoid seals. Above 8000 ft, expect lower performance even with the correct jet. For grounding, drive a pipe at least ¾ in. wide or a rod at least 5/8 in. wide, 8 ft deep, and connect it with #6 AWG wire. The neutral is permanently bonded to the frame.
The maintenance schedule covers the air filter (service it more often in dusty areas), the spark plug, and the spark arrestor. A qualified technician should handle valve clearance, idle speed, cleaning the carburetor and fuel tank, and removing carbon from the combustion chamber. If the generator will sit unused for more than 20 days, add stabilizer to the fuel or drain the carburetor, and put a tablespoon of oil in the cylinder. During long storage, run the engine every 3 months for 15–20 minutes, or the warranty is void.
