Farberware FW12-100024366 Details
The Farberware FW12-100024366 is a compact single serve brewer that takes either K-Cup capsules or ground coffee. It ships with two inserts, a Capsule Holder and a Ground Coffee Holder, and both sit inside a removable Funnel. The manual says you must always brew with the Funnel in place because it stops hot coffee from spilling onto the counter. A Release Lever unlocks the hinged Lid, which has a needle and seal on its underside that pierce the capsule.
The control panel works in four modes: Standby, Operating, Brewing and Cleaning. Each mode shows a different lighting pattern, so you can tell the machine's status at a glance. While coffee is brewing, the K-CUP or GROUND button you pressed flashes. In Cleaning mode, the CLEAN button flashes instead. If you want the default cup, you can skip the SIZE button and press K-CUP or GROUND directly to start brewing right away.
A useful feature is the memory function in low water mode. If the reservoir runs dry partway through a brew, the machine pauses and the ADD WATER indicator flashes. After you refill the reservoir and press ON/OFF, pressing K-CUP or GROUND resumes the cycle. The brewer then finishes the brew based on the preset size and the water it has already used, so you don't end up with a double-strength or overfilled cup.
The removable Drip Tray with Cup Holder fits into either of two mounting positions. The upper slots suit small cups and need the tray to be locked securely in place. The lower slots fit taller travel mugs, and the tray must sit flat there. Before first use, run at least two full cycles with no coffee or capsule. This burns off production residues that can briefly cause an odor or light smoke. Keep the room well ventilated while you do this.
For ground coffee, fill the holder only up to the MAX line and don't pack it down. The manual warns against espresso-fine grinds because they can clog the holder. If water won't flow or the unit leaks, a coarser grind usually fixes it. Farberware also recommends grinding whole beans just before brewing, never reusing grounds, and drinking coffee fresh rather than reheating it. Stored grounds should be resealed and kept in the refrigerator.
Cleaning is simple because there are no user-serviceable internal parts. You can wash the drip tray, holders and funnel in hot soapy water or in the dishwasher. Wipe the needle seal under the Lid with a damp cloth, but never remove it. After descaling, rinse the system by brewing 14 oz of plain water at least three times. Once a cleaning cycle starts, only unplugging the unit will stop it. Finishing a cleaning cycle resets the brew counter.
The manual also suggests not placing the brewer under wall cabinets, because rising steam can damage wooden furniture. For storage, make sure the unit is cool, clean and dry. Don't wrap the cord around the housing, and keep the machine out of reach of children and pets. The short power cord is meant to reduce tripping and pulling hazards. If you use an extension cord, its electrical rating must be at least equal to the appliance's.
