Farberware Pressure Cooker FPC600 Details

The Farberware FPC600 uses a Self-Locking Lid rather than a twist-on lid. You pull the two Upper Handles apart to open the Self-Locking Grips, set the lid on the pot, and let go so the grips clamp onto the rim. A sliding Safety Lock moves between LOCK and UNLOCK, and the Pressure Regulator Knob has three positions: PRESSURE, STEAM and CLEAN. A Pressure Indicator pops UP while the pot is pressurized and drops DOWN once the pressure is gone, so you can see when it is safe to open.

The control panel uses colored lights to show what the cooker is doing. The yellow WARM light flashes while food is being kept warm. When cooking under HIGH pressure the red light blinks, and under LOW pressure the green light blinks. The blinking gets faster as pressure builds. The STEAM light behaves the same way as the liquid heats to a boil. When cooking ends, the unit beeps three times, then keeps beeping now and then until you press START/STOP.

The BROWN mode has no timer, and the display shows "--" while it runs. Let it preheat for about five minutes before you add food. Because it is a high-temperature setting, the cooker beeps three times every 10 minutes as a reminder that it is still on. If you set a cook time and then press WARM, the cooker switches to warming on its own when cooking finishes. In IDLE Mode, the display shows "--" after 5 seconds when a program has not been fully set.

The cook time countdown starts only once full pressure is reached, so preheating time is not included. Natural Release is best for stocks, sauces and large cuts of meat; the recipes say it takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The Quick Steam Release button must be pressed in short bursts only, and you should not use it for foods with a lot of liquid because they can overflow. If food comes out undercooked, lock the lid again and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes.

The manual sets clear fill limits. Fill no more than one-third full for dried beans, halfway for soups and stews, and up to the MAX Fill Line for vegetables and whole pieces of meat. For steaming, stay under two-thirds full. When cooking rice, add one tablespoon of oil per cup to reduce foaming. Do not cook foods that foam, such as applesauce, cranberries, pearl barley, oatmeal, split peas, noodles, rhubarb or spaghetti. Never deep-fry or pressure-fry, and cook dumplings only with the lid off.

Before first use, test the gasket seal. Fill the pot two-thirds with water, run it on HIGH pressure for 15 minutes, wait another 15 minutes, then release the pressure. After each use, wipe the Sensor Pad on the bottom of the pot. To clean the Steam Release Valve, turn the regulator knob to CLEAN, lift it off, and brush the valve. Use only plastic or wooden utensils so you don't scratch the non-stick coating. A steaming rack or basket is not included.

The manual includes recipes written by cookbook author Tom Lacalamita, such as sauerbraten, risotto and beef stew. It also has cooking-time charts for fresh and frozen vegetables, fruit, beans and legumes, rice, meat, poultry and seafood. Under the warranty, a repaired or replaced unit stays covered for the rest of the original year plus one extra month. For repairs after the warranty ends, you must include $10.00 for return shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Farberware Pressure Cooker 6 QT FPC600, and we answer them below.

How do I cancel a cook time or delay time before cooking starts?
Press COOK TIME and START/STOP at the same time to reset the cook time to "01". Press DELAY TIME and START/STOP at the same time to reset the delay time to "00".

Why does the display show '--'?
If you enter a time but don't choose a program or press START, the cooker goes into IDLE Mode and shows "--" after 5 seconds. Press COOK TIME or DELAY TIME to go back to your settings. The display also shows "--" while BROWN mode is running.

Should the Safety Lock be locked when steaming?
No. When steaming food or cooking rice, leave the Safety Lock in the UNLOCK position and turn the Pressure Regulator Knob to STEAM. Use LOCK only when cooking under pressure.

Does the cook time include preheating?
No. The countdown starts only after full pressure is reached.

How much liquid do I need for pressure cooking?
For most foods, add at least 1 cup (8 ounces) of liquid, or follow the amounts in the cooking charts.

How much rice can I cook at once?
No more than 2 cups of rice. Cook it with the STEAM function and add one tablespoon of vegetable oil per cup to reduce foaming.

Why does the cooker beep while browning?
In BROWN mode the cooker beeps three times every 10 minutes to remind you that it is on a high-temperature setting. Do not leave it unattended while browning.

When should I use Natural Release instead of Quick Steam Release?
Use Natural Release for stocks, sauces and large cuts of meat, which benefit from cooking a little longer as the pressure drops. Use Quick Steam Release in short bursts for foods that overcook easily, but not for foods with a lot of liquid.

Which foods should not be cooked in the FPC600?
Avoid applesauce, cranberries, pearl barley, oatmeal and other cereals, split peas, noodles, macaroni, rhubarb and spaghetti. These foods foam and can block the Steam Release Valve.

How do I clean the Steam Release Valve?
Once the unit has cooled, remove the lid, turn the Pressure Regulator Knob to CLEAN and lift it off. Then use the included brush to clear any food particles from the valve. Put the knob back on before using the cooker again.

What should I do after a power interruption?
If the cooker is unplugged or switched off, wait at least 30 seconds for the program to clear before turning it back on.

Where can I get a replacement gasket?
Call Consumer Service toll-free at 1-800-233-9054 and ask for replacement gasket P/N 20890.

How long is the warranty?
The FPC600 has a one-year limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. It covers the original purchaser and applies only to units bought and used in the USA.
