Pioneer DEH-S5120BT Receiver Details

The Pioneer DEH-S5120BT is the top model in its 2018 single-DIN CD receiver series. It has a detachable front panel to deter theft, and the panel can also be secured with the supplied screw. When the ignition is first turned on after installation, a setup menu walks you through the display language and the clock. You can then turn off the demo display through DEMO OFF in the SYSTEM menu. Firmware can be updated, and system information checked, from SYSTEM UPDATE in the INITIAL settings.

The receiver works closely with the Pioneer Smart Sync app. Through the app, you can start navigation apps, have incoming messages read aloud and choose your source from the phone. The app also unlocks features the head unit doesn't offer on its own. These include a 31-band EQ, Super "Todoroki" Sound for stronger bass and Easy Sound Fit, which sets time alignment based on your vehicle type. On this model, a theme feature sets the wallpaper and the display, key and character colors in one step.

The S5 series is the only one in this lineup with customizable illumination. You can set the key and display colors separately or together. Choose from 12 preset colors, a SCAN mode that cycles through colors or a custom mix of red, green and blue at levels from 0 to 60. PHONE COLOR changes the key color when a call comes in, and you can pick one of six flash effects. Key and display brightness each adjust from 1 to 10. A dimmer lead can link brightness to the car's headlights.

The MIXTRAX function plays your USB or iPhone library as a non-stop mix with lighting effects. You can limit each track's playback time to between 1.0 and 3.0 minutes. Lighting can flash on the keys, the display or both. It follows one of six sound-level patterns, six low-pass patterns or three random patterns. A CUT IN FX option adds sound effects when you change tracks manually.

For calls, up to two phones can be connected at once. The phone menu gives you call history, phonebook access, automatic answering and six preset contacts saved on the number buttons. A private mode moves the call back to the phone's handset. Pressing and holding the phone key starts Siri or Android voice recognition. The receiver can register more than two and up to five devices, so each passenger can take turns playing music over Bluetooth.

Built-in sound tuning includes POSITION, which sets speaker delay and level for the driver's seat, the front seats or the whole cabin. LOUDNESS adds clarity at low volume. Sound Retriever restores detail in compressed files, and SLA matches volume across sources. D.BASS adds a low or high bass boost that sounds as if a subwoofer had been added. You can save your audio settings and load them again later. Pandora and Spotify can also be controlled from the unit, including thumbs ratings, creating stations and bookmarking tracks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Pioneer DEH-S5120BT Audio Receiver, and we answer them below.

How do I reset the Pioneer DEH-S5120BT if it stops working properly?
Remove the front panel. Then press the RESET button with a pointed tool longer than 8 mm. You should also reset the unit before using it for the first time after installation, or if strange messages appear on the display.

How many phones can be connected via Bluetooth at the same time?
Up to two Bluetooth telephones can be connected at once. If ten or more Bluetooth devices are connected, they may not work properly.

Can I connect a subwoofer without an external amplifier?
Yes. In the INITIAL settings, set REAR-SP to [SW]. Then connect a passive subwoofer to the rear speaker (violet and violet/black) leads. The unit can deliver 70 W into a 2 Ω load, which you get by wiring two 4 Ω subwoofers in parallel.

What is the preout voltage of the DEH-S5120BT?
The maximum preout level is 4.0 V. That's higher than the 2.0 V of the DEH-S5100BT, and it gives external amplifiers a stronger, cleaner signal.

Does the unit play FLAC files?
Yes, but only from USB. It supports FLAC v1.2.1 at up to 96 kHz and 24 bit. FLAC and WAV files can't be played through an MTP connection.

Which iPhone models are supported?
The manual lists iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus, 7, 7 Plus, SE, 6s, 6s Plus, 6, 6 Plus, 5s, 5c and 5. Connect your iPhone with the Lightning to USB cable. Pioneer Smart Sync requires iOS 10.3 or later.

Why are Pandora, Spotify or the APP source unavailable?
These sources turn off when [USB MTP] is set to [ON] in the SYSTEM settings. Set it to [OFF], then choose WIRED or BLUETOOTH in APP CONTROL to match how your phone is connected.

What does the AMP ERROR message mean?
The unit has failed to operate, a speaker is connected incorrectly or the protective circuit has activated. Check the speaker wiring, then turn the ignition off and on again. If the message stays on screen, contact an authorized Pioneer Service Station.

Which USB formats and sizes are supported?
USB devices must be formatted as FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32. The unit plays up to 1 500 folders and 15 000 files, and only the first partition is read. USB hubs aren't supported, and the port supplies up to 1.5 A.

Can I customize the illumination colors?
Yes. You can choose from 12 preset colors, use SCAN mode or create a custom RGB color with levels from 0 to 60 for the keys and the display.

Where should I install the microphone?
Place the supplied microphone on the sun visor or the steering column, directly in front of the driver. Make sure the cable can't wrap around the steering column or the shift lever.

Does the unit drain the battery?
It can if you leave it on standby waiting for a Bluetooth phone connection while the engine is off. In cars without an ACC position, connect the red lead to a terminal that detects the ignition key. Otherwise, the battery may drain.
