Everstart Maxx BC40BE 15-40 Amp Details

The Everstart Maxx BC40BE is a 12V automatic charger with four functions: charging, voltage checking, alternator testing and battery reconditioning, plus engine start. It is run from four buttons and a detailed LCD screen. The screen shows clamp icons, arrow icons, a battery icon with four bars, a fault icon, an overheat alarm, temperature icons and a charge gauge, so you can see what the unit is doing at any moment.

When you plug in the charger, it enters Standby Mode. The clamp icon flashes until the clamps are attached. If the clamps go on with the wrong polarity, the "+" and "–" symbols and the fault icon flash, and an alarm sounds until you remove the clamps. When the connection is correct, the icons stay lit and you press the charge/voltage button to start charging. The display then shows the output current, and the battery bars fill from bottom to top over and over.

The charger has several built-in protections. If it overheats, the overheat and fault icons flash. You should disconnect it and let it cool for several minutes with good ventilation around it. It also checks the battery's condition and shows a fault if it finds a problem. Its temperature compensation feature works in hot or cold surroundings, and the temperature icons that appear are information only, not fault codes.

When the battery is full, the unit switches by itself to float charge mode and shows "FLO", with the gauge at 100%. In this mode it keeps watching the battery voltage and tops it up as needed for as long as it stays connected. To stop at any time, hold the charge/voltage button for three seconds. In Standby or Charging Mode, a short press shows the battery voltage instead.

The alternator check runs in two parts with the engine idling and a fully charged battery. First, test with no load and all accessories off. Then test under load, with as many accessories on as possible except A/C and defrost. The screen shows "Good" if the alternator is fine, or "ALT" with a flashing fault icon if the voltage is out of the normal range. The manual warns that results may not be accurate for every vehicle.

The battery reconditioning function sends electrical pulses that break up crystallized lead sulfate and turn it back into useful electrolyte. While it runs, the battery bars empty from top to bottom over and over, and the reconditioning icons flash. Other buttons do nothing during this process. You can stop it early by pressing the recondition button again. When it finishes, the charger moves into charging mode automatically.

For engine start, the charger first preps the battery with a countdown. When it beeps and the engine start icon flashes, you crank the engine. The manual gives detailed safety rules: work only in ventilated areas, keep sparks away, and wear eye protection. It also explains first aid for battery acid and connection steps for negative-ground and positive-ground vehicles. To make the cords last longer, coil them loosely for storage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Everstart Maxx BC40BE 15-40 Amp Battery Charger, and we answer them below.

What types of batteries can the Everstart Maxx BC40BE charge?
It charges 12 volt lead acid batteries only. Do not use it on dry-cell household batteries, because they may burst.

Why won't my battery charge?
Make sure all connections are secure and the charger is plugged into a working 120V AC outlet. If the battery has dropped below 2 volts, this charger cannot recharge it.

What does the F04 code mean?
F04 means the battery did not reach full charge after 18 hours of continuous charging, so the charger stopped automatically. The battery may have internal damage. Have a qualified technician check it.

What happens when I connect the clamps with the wrong polarity?
The "+" and "–" symbols and the fault icon flash, and an alarm sounds. Unplug the charger, remove the clamps and connect them again correctly: red to positive, black to negative.

How long should I wait between engine start attempts?
Wait 4 to 5 minutes before trying again. The engine start function delivers 40A for 5 seconds and needs a 5-minute rest between attempts.

How long does battery reconditioning take?
Reconditioning stops automatically after 24 hours, and some batteries may need more than one cycle. If 5 cycles don't improve the battery's performance, recycle the battery.

Can I leave the charger connected after the battery is full?
Yes. The unit switches to float charge mode ("FLO"). It watches the battery voltage and charges only as needed to keep the battery full.

Why do temperature icons appear on the screen?
The high temperature icon appears above about 40°C and the low temperature icon below 0°C. They are not fault codes. They show that the temperature compensation feature is working.

Can I charge a marine battery on board my boat?
No. Take marine batteries out of the boat and charge them on shore. This unit is not designed for on-board marine charging.

What warranty does the BC40BE have?
It has a two-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, counted from the date of retail purchase by the original buyer. For service, call 1-877-571-2391.
