Everstart Maxx 50 Amp BC50BE Details

The Everstart Maxx BC50BE is built around a smart, high-frequency charging concept that reads the battery before it does anything. When plugged in without clamps attached, the LCD shows a flashing clamp icon, an empty battery icon and the gauge with no pointer. Once the clamps are attached correctly, the unit goes into Standby mode, and the clamp icons, arrow icons and battery icon light solid. Charging begins only when the user presses the charge button, so the charger never starts working by surprise.

Feedback on screen is detailed. While charging, the digital readout shows the output current, the gauge shows the state of charge, the battery bars fill from bottom to top and the arrows move toward the battery icon. The Quick Start Guide notes that a solid battery icon means the battery is fully charged and a flashing one means it is still charging. If the charger cannot sense enough baseline voltage, it may switch to reconditioning instead of normal charging.

Protection is a core part of the design. A reverse polarity alarm sounds a continuous beep and flashes the "+" and "–" symbols and the fault icon until the clamps are removed. The overheat alarm tells the user to unplug, let the unit cool for several minutes and improve ventilation. A separate battery fault indication means the battery needs to be checked by a qualified technician. The high and low temperature icons are not faults. They only show that temperature compensation is active.

The alternator check runs in two parts. Part 1 tests with no load, with all accessories off, a fully charged battery and the engine at normal idle. Part 2 tests under load, with as many accessories on as possible, except A/C and defrost. The display flashes "Check" during the analysis, then shows "Good" or "ALT" with a flashing fault icon. All other buttons are disabled during the test. Results may not be accurate on every vehicle, and the test is for 12V systems only.

The battery reconditioning function sends electrical pulses that break up crystalline lead sulfate and turn it back into usable electrolyte. On screen, the battery bars empty from top to bottom and the recondition icons flash. Pressing the button again stops the process, and the other buttons do nothing during the cycle. The manual says to recycle the battery if five cycles do not help. The Quick Start Guide is stricter: stop charging if the battery does not take a charge after one cycle.

The Quick Start Guide stresses that the Engine Start feature is not a jump-starting function. It delivers a concentrated, high-amperage charge before cranking. After the countdown, a beep sounds and the engine start icon flashes to show the vehicle is ready to crank. The user should crank in 3 to 5 second bursts. The voltage check button can also be used in Standby or charging mode, and the unit returns to its previous mode automatically.

For care, clean the casing and cords with a dry cloth only, and always unplug the charger from the outlet and the battery first. Coil the cords loosely and never wrap them tightly around the unit. Store the charger in a clean, dry, cool place. Never place it above the battery, because battery gases corrode the housing. Marine batteries must be charged on shore. Opening the housing, using an improper extension cord or misusing the charger will void the two-year warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Everstart Maxx 50 Amp BC50BE Battery Charger, and we answer them below.

What is the charging output of the Everstart Maxx BC50BE?
The charger delivers 12V DC at 15A for charging and 50A in Engine Start mode. It draws 120V AC, 60Hz, 245W from the outlet.

Can I use the BC50BE on 6V or 24V batteries?
No. The unit is designed only for 12 volt lead acid batteries. Do not use it on dry-cell household batteries, because they may burst.

Is the Engine Start function the same as a jump starter?
No. The Quick Start Guide states clearly that it is not a jump-starting function. It sends a concentrated, high-amperage charge to the battery during a countdown, and then you can try to start the vehicle.

How long should I wait between engine start attempts?
Wait 4 to 5 minutes between attempts. The rated duty cycle is 5 seconds on and 5 minutes off. After cranking, the unit charges at 3A for 5 minutes and then returns to charging mode.

What does the F04 code mean?
F04 appears when the battery has not reached 100% after 18 hours of continuous charging. The charger stops automatically. The battery may be damaged internally and should be checked by a qualified technician.

What does FLO on the display mean?
FLO means the charger is in float charge mode. The battery is fully charged, and the unit monitors its voltage and tops it up as needed for as long as it stays connected and plugged in.

Why won't my charger start charging?
Make sure all connections are secure and that the outlet is a live 120V AC outlet. If the battery has fallen below 2 volts, this charger cannot recharge it. If there is not enough baseline voltage, the unit may go into reconditioning mode.

What happens if I connect the clamps backwards?
A continuous warning beep sounds, and the fault icon and the "+" and "–" symbols flash. Unplug the charger, remove the clamps and reconnect them with the correct polarity.

How long does battery reconditioning take?
A reconditioning cycle lasts 24 hours and then switches to charging mode automatically. You can stop it sooner by pressing the recondition button again.

What do the temperature icons mean?
They show that temperature compensation is active when the surroundings are above about 40°C or below 0°C. They are not fault codes.

Can I charge a frozen battery or a battery inside a boat?
No. Never charge a frozen battery. Marine batteries must be removed and charged on shore, because the unit is not designed for marine use.

What does the warranty cover?
The BC50BE has a two-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser. Accessories, fuses, misuse and commercial use are not covered. For service, call 1-877-571-2391.
