DSC PC1832 Security System Details

The DSC PC1832 is a PowerSeries control panel. It sits in a metal cabinet that holds the electronics, fuses and standby battery, and that cabinet is usually mounted out of the way in a utility closet or basement. Users control the system from keypads placed near the entry and exit doors. LED keypads use zone and status lights, while LCD models show text messages. Fire detection, carbon monoxide detection and central station monitoring all have to be enabled by the installer before they work.

The panel has several arming modes. Away arming protects the whole premises, and Stay arming protects the perimeter while bypassing interior motion sensors. Night arming ([][1]) arms the interior zones but leaves designated night zones open so people can still move around. No-Entry arming ([][9]) turns off the entry delay, so any entry causes an instant alarm. On CP-01 versions, the Silent Exit Delay mutes the keypad buzzer and doubles the exit time for that exit only.

Some features are there to cut down on false alarms. The Audible Exit Fault sounds a continuous keypad tone and the siren if you don't leave in time or leave the entry/exit door unsecured. The keypad also gives error tones when you enter an invalid code or try to arm with open sensors. Wireless keys can arm and disarm the system from outside, and the siren confirms with one squawk for arming and two for disarming when bell squawk is enabled.

The F, A and P emergency keys send Fire, Auxiliary or Panic alarms when held for 2 seconds. The installer can disable the Fire keys. Zone bypassing lets you leave individual zones out before arming. Bypasses are cleared every time the system is disarmed. You can also clear all bypasses (00), recall the last bypass set (99), save a Bypass Group (95) and recall that group (91). Bypass Groups are not allowed in UL-listed installations.

Programming codes is flexible. A code can be a Supervisor Code, which can create other codes with equal or lesser attributes, or a Duress Code, which silently sends a duress report. Other attributes enable zone bypassing, ESCORT remote access, bell squawk and one-time use. The panel rejects duplicate codes and codes that differ by just one from an existing code. A partition assignment mask controls which partitions each code can access.

From the User Function menu ([*][6]), you can set the time and date, enable auto-arm and auto-disarm, set daily auto-arm times for each partition, run a system test, open a DLS service window and start a user call-up. If you enter a valid code during the warning period, auto-arming is cancelled and a cancellation report can be sent. Trouble acknowledgement with key [9] lets you arm despite active troubles, and the override is logged with the user's identity.

LCD keypads have a Global Status screen that shows each partition as armed, ready, not ready, in alarm or not enabled. Alarm Memory ([][3]) shows which sensors triggered an alarm. The Sensor Reset command ([][7][2]) clears latched detectors such as smoke and glass break sensors. Door chime, language selection on supported keypads and PGM commands for devices such as garage doors add everyday convenience. The manual also gives guidance on placing smoke and CO detectors and on planning fire escapes.

How many partitions does the PC1832 have?
The PC1832 supports 4 partitions. Each access code can be assigned to one or more partitions with the Partition Assignment Mask command [*][5][Master Code][98].

How do I add or change a user code?

Quick Exit lets you leave while the system stays armed. Hold the Quick Exit key for 2 seconds or press [*][0], and you have 2 minutes to leave through the exit door.

How can I tell which type of alarm is sounding?
A temporal or pulsed siren means a fire alarm. A pattern of 4 beeps, a 5-second pause and 4 more beeps means a carbon monoxide alarm. A continuous siren means a burglary alarm. Fire has the highest priority, followed by CO and then burglary.

What should I do when the trouble light comes on?
Press [#] to silence the beeps, then press [*][2] to see the trouble. Numbers 1-8 identify the problem, such as loss of AC power, a telephone line fault or a low battery. For most troubles, call for service. For trouble 8, re-program the time and date.

How do I test my system?
Press [*][6][Master Code][4]. The keypad sounders and the bell run for 2 seconds, the keypad lights turn on and the standby battery is checked. Call your monitoring station before and after the test. Test the system weekly.

Can I bypass a zone once the system is armed?
No. Zones can only be bypassed while the system is disarmed, using [*][1]. Bypasses are cancelled every time the system is disarmed, and 24-hour zones can only be unbypassed manually.

What is a Duress Code?
A Duress Code is a user code that sends a duress report to the central station whenever it is used. To make a code a Duress Code, turn on User Code Attribute 2.

How often should the standby battery be replaced?
DSC recommends replacing the standby batteries every 3-5 years. The [*][6][Master Code][4] system test also measures the battery's condition.

What telephone connection does the PC1832 use?
It connects through a USOC RJ-31X jack, wired in series with and ahead of all other telephone equipment so the panel can take over the line in an emergency. The REN is 0.1.
