Hunter 44155c Thermostat Details

The Hunter 44155C Set & Save is a battery-powered programmable thermostat built to replace an existing wall unit with only basic tools. Before you take the old thermostat off, turn off the system at the thermostat and the main power panel. Then label every wire with the stickers provided, going by the old terminal letters instead of wire color, since wire colors do not always follow standards. Secure the wires so they don't slip back into the wall while you disconnect them.

To mount the unit, press the release tab to separate the wall plate and feed the labeled wires through the opening. If the old holes don't line up, level the plate and mark new ones. Drill the holes, tap the anchors in flush with the wall, and fasten the plate. Loosen each terminal screw without removing it, insert the wire behind the black terminal shield, and tighten. Wrap any unused wires in electrical tape and push them back into the wall.

Before you attach the thermostat, set the SYSTEM switch to OFF and the FAN switch to AUTO. Then set the switches on the back of the unit: HE/HG for the heating fuel, STD/HP for the system type, and the Auto Recovery position. Hook the top of the thermostat over the two tabs on the wall plate and snap the bottom into place without forcing it, since the terminal pins can be damaged. Insert the batteries and restore power.

To switch to Celsius, hold Up, press Reset with a paperclip, and release Reset when the LCD lights up. Changing the scale resets the factory default programs. To set the day and time, press Day/Time repeatedly to step through hour, minutes and weekday, and adjust each with Up or Down. Pressing Day/Time and then Program switches to 24-hour format, which turns off the AM/PM indicator.

The unit comes with four energy-saving default programs. Program 1 (6 am) and Program 3 (4 pm) heat to 68 °F and cool to 78 °F. Program 2 (8 am) sets 60 °F heat and 85 °F cool. Program 4 (10 pm) sets 60 °F heat and 82 °F cool. For custom schedules, slide the System switch to HEAT or COOL, press Program, and set the hour, minutes and temperature for each period. Repeat for every day, then do the same for the other mode.

For manual control, hold Up or Down for one second to enter Manual Override, which changes only the current program. For a permanent hold, press Hold/Return until the Hold icon appears, then adjust the temperature. You can change the span setting by holding Up and Down together until SPAN appears. Higher values make the system run longer, and the span returns to 2 after a reset or a battery change.

Auto Recovery works out how much lead time the system needs to reach the next program temperature and flashes RECO while it runs. It does not work while a hold is active. The low-battery icon has two stages: at the second stage the system shuts off until you install new batteries. An ERR message points to a battery fault and means you have to reset and reprogram the thermostat. The troubleshooting section covers blank displays, wrong program timing and systems that won't turn on.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Hunter 44155c Thermostat, and we answer them below.

Does the Hunter 44155C work with a heat pump?
Yes, but only a single-stage heat pump without auxiliary heat. Set the System Type switch on the back to HP. It is not designed for multi-stage heat pumps or 110/220 V baseboard heating.

Do I need to connect the C wire?
No. The 44155C runs on two AA alkaline batteries, so a C (common) wire is not used. If you have one, don't connect it to any terminal.

Should I remove the jumper between RC and RH?
Only if you have separate RH and RC wires. If your system has only one R wire, leave the jumper in place.

How do I switch the display from Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Hold the Up button, press Reset with a paperclip, and release Reset when the LCD turns on while still holding Up. This resets the thermostat to the factory default programs.

How do I reset the filter change reminder?
After you replace the filter, hold the Filter button for 3 seconds. The indicator flashes after 400 hours of system use.

Why does my air conditioner not start right away?
The thermostat has compressor protection, which adds a delay of about 3.5 to 4 minutes after a cooling cycle before the compressor can restart.

What happens to my programs when I change the batteries?
Programs and time settings stay in memory for about one minute after you remove the batteries. If all battery power is lost, they are erased.

What does RECO mean on the display?
It means Auto Recovery is gradually bringing the temperature to the next program setting. Press Hold/Return to cancel it, or set the recovery switch to DISABLE to turn the feature off.

What should I do if the screen permanently shows HI, LO or ERR?
If ERR appears, replace the batteries, then reset and reprogram the thermostat. If HI, LO or ERR stays on the screen permanently, the manual says to replace the unit.
