RIBU1C Enclosed Relay 10Amp Details

The RIBU1C from Functional Devices, Inc. is a compact, pre-wired pilot relay. It lets a controller, thermostat, building automation output or other low-power device switch a separate load. It is supplied in a closed housing with a threaded hub, so it can be mounted directly to a junction box, panel knockout or fixture. This avoids building a separate relay panel and makes it practical for HVAC, lighting and general building control retrofits where space and installation time are limited.

The relay has two coil inputs, so one part number covers both low-voltage and line-voltage control signals. The White/Blue lead is the 10-30 Vac/dc coil input, and the White/Black lead is the 120 Vac coil input. The White/Yellow lead is the shared coil common. The installer connects only the input that matches the control signal and returns it to the common or neutral of the controller or thermostat. Because the same relay works with 24 Vac thermostats, 12 Vdc controllers and 120 Vac signals, stocking it is simpler for contractors.

On the load side, the relay contacts are color-coded too. Yellow is the contact common, Orange is normally open (N/O) and Blue is normally closed (N/C). In a typical installation, line power connects to the Yellow common, and the Orange lead becomes the switched leg to a light or other load. That load can run at up to 28 Vdc or 277 Vac. The Blue N/C contact can be used when the load must stay on until the coil is energized, such as for fail-safe or alternate-circuit logic.

The RIBU1C comes in several versions. The standard RIBU1C has a grey NEMA 1 housing listed to UL916. The RIBU1C-RD has a red NEMA 1 housing and carries UL864 and California State Fire Marshal approval, which helps identify it in fire and life-safety circuits. The RIBU1C-N4 has a clear housing for wet or washdown locations. The selection guide rates it NEMA 4 to UL508, while the installation guide lists it as NEMA 4X. All versions are accepted for use in plenum spaces.

For larger projects, the grey standard model is also sold in multi-packs: RIBU1C-10PACK, RIBU1C-25PACK, RIBU1C-100PACK and the bulk RIBU1C-3K with 3,000 units per SKU. All of them carry the same UL Listed, C-UL, UL916, CE and RoHS approvals. The ballast rating does not cover electronic ballasts, so check lighting loads before you install. The relay has no manual override, so testing must be done by energizing the coil.

Functional Devices is based in Indiana and has been building products since 1969. It backs the RIBU1C with a 10-year limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship from the date of purchase. The warranty does not cover units that have been opened, misused, or damaged by lightning, water or condensation. For warranty service, get a Return Authorization number from the factory. Ship the unit freight prepaid with the purchase receipt and a description of the defect.

Under the seller's terms, non-custom products in salable condition may be returned for credit within 90 days of shipment with prior approval. A restocking fee of up to 25% may apply. Shortage or non-conformance claims must be made within 10 days of receipt.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the RIBU1C Enclosed Relay 10Amp, and we answer them below.

What control voltages can operate the RIBU1C coil?
The coil accepts 10-30 Vac/dc on the White/Blue lead or 120 Vac on the White/Black lead, at 50-60 Hz. White/Yellow is the coil common for both inputs.

What are the pull-in and drop-out voltages?
The relay pulls in at 9 Vac / 10 Vdc and drops out at 2.1 Vac / 2.8 Vdc.

Which wire colors are used for the contacts?
Yellow is the contact common, Orange is normally open (N/O) and Blue is normally closed (N/C). All lead wires are 16 inches long and rated 600 V.

What is the maximum load the contacts can switch?
The contacts are rated 10 Amp resistive at 120-277 Vac and 10 Amp resistive at 28 Vdc. They are also rated 480 VA pilot duty at 240-277 Vac, 600 W tungsten at 120 Vac (N/O) and up to 1/3 HP at 120-240 Vac (N/O).

Can the RIBU1C switch lighting with electronic ballasts?
No. The relay is rated 480 VA for ballast loads at 277 Vac, but it is not rated for electronic ballasts.

Does the RIBU1C have a manual override switch?
No. The relay has no override switch. It has an LED that lights when the relay is activated.

Can it be installed in a plenum space?
Yes. All RIBU1C housings, including the RD and N4 versions, are accepted for use in plenum spaces.

What is the difference between RIBU1C, RIBU1C-RD and RIBU1C-N4?
The RIBU1C has a grey NEMA 1 housing (UL916). The RIBU1C-RD has a red NEMA 1 housing with UL864 and California State Fire Marshal approval. The RIBU1C-N4 has a clear NEMA 4 housing for wet locations; the installation guide rates it NEMA 4X.

How is the relay mounted?
It measures 1.70" H x 2.80" W x 1.50" D and has a 0.50" NPT threaded hub. You mount it through a standard knockout on a junction box or electrical enclosure.

What operating environment is the relay designed for?
It operates from -30 to 140 °F at 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity.

How long is the relay expected to last?
The expected mechanical life is a minimum of 10 million cycles, and the operate time is 20 ms.

Is the RIBU1C available in bulk quantities?
Yes. The grey standard model is sold as RIBU1C-10PACK, RIBU1C-25PACK, RIBU1C-100PACK and RIBU1C-3K, which has 3,000 units.

What warranty does the RIBU1C have?
It has a 10-year limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship. Units that have been opened, misused, or damaged by lightning, water or condensation are not covered.

How do I request warranty service?
Call the factory for a Return Authorization number. Ship the unit freight prepaid with the sales receipt and a written description of the defect to Functional Devices, Inc., 101 Commerce Drive, Sharpsville, IN 46068.
