Hoover Spinscrub 50 Carpet Cleaner Details

The Hoover Spinscrub 50 is assembled in minutes: the upper handle slides into the base and is secured with two screws, and the solution tank is set onto the base and pushed until it clicks into place. To move the cleaner between rooms, lock the handle upright, tilt the unit back on its wheels and push it forward. The Mesh Tool Storage Bag can hang on the back of the unit or anywhere else using its hook, but it should not hang on the cleaner while it is running.

The cleaning method uses alternating wet and dry strokes. In Wash mode, squeeze the trigger while pushing the cleaner forward and again while pulling it back. Then release the trigger and make dry strokes until very little water is visible passing through the Dirty Water Tank lid. Each area needs at least four passes. Use straight, parallel strokes that overlap by about 1 inch to prevent streaking, and keep the nozzle flat on the floor.

To avoid soaking the carpet, Hoover limits cleaning to no more than four wet strokes over any one area, always finishing with dry strokes. After washing, Hoover recommends a water-only rinse in Rinse mode to remove leftover solution. Before cleaning, the manual advises vacuuming thoroughly, pretreating spots, and testing the carpet for colorfastness with a white cloth, waiting ten minutes. Berber, natural fiber and soft fiber carpets should be tested in a hidden area first.

For upholstery, use the machine only on fabrics coded W or S/W. Never use it on fabrics coded S. With the handle locked upright, the SpinScrub floor brushes stop rotating, so it is safe to use the hose and tools. On upholstery, make no more than two passes with solution over any area. On stairs, overlap strokes by 1/2 inch and keep the main unit at the bottom of the staircase or on the floor, never on the steps.

The Dirty Water Tank is easy to empty: open the latch, lift the tank by its handle and swivel the Quick Spout Pour Cap away from the drain hole. The lid comes off so you can rinse it and clear lint from its filter screen. Suction depends on a well-sealed lid, a closed pour cap and the tank being latched correctly. When the tank is full, the motor sounds noticeably higher-pitched, which tells you to empty it.

Maintenance requires no special tools. Tilt the cleaner back, turn the nozzle latch, and the nozzle snaps off for rinsing. The brush assembly pulls straight out for cleaning under running water. To refit it, align the side posts and the hexagonal drive post. If the brushes turn slowly, clean the lint screen behind the nozzle. After using the tools, drain the hose and solution tube, and let the tanks air dry before storage.

Because water drips from the brushes after use, the manual says to place the unit on a towel and to avoid leaving it on wood or laminate floors. If the hose won't spray after you refill the tanks, prime the pump by lowering the hose to the floor and holding the trigger for up to one minute. Store the cleaner indoors where it won't freeze, and never store it with solution in the tanks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Hoover Spinscrub 50 Carpet Cleaner, and we answer them below.

What is the hottest water I can put in the Clean Water Tank?
Do not fill the tank with water hotter than 140°F (60°C). Hot tap water cleans much better than cold water.

Can I use non-Hoover cleaning solutions?
No. Use only Hoover cleaning products made for this machine, such as Clean Plus 2X. Other solutions may harm the machine and void the warranty.

Why did the cleaner suddenly stop picking up water?
The Dirty Water Tank is probably full. The yellow float disk rises and shuts off suction, and the motor sounds higher-pitched. Turn the cleaner off, empty the tank, and check whether the solution tank needs refilling.

Why is suction low even with an empty tank?
Make sure the Dirty Water Tank and its lid are secured properly, the Quick Spout Pour Cap is closed, the nozzle is positioned correctly, and the lid filter screen and nozzle are free of clogs. Also check the tool on the end of the hose for blockages.

How many wet strokes can I make over one area?
No more than four wet strokes per area on carpet, and no more than two passes with solution on upholstery. Always finish with dry strokes.

Why won't the brushes rotate?
The brushes do not turn while the handle is upright. If they turn slowly or stop during floor cleaning, unplug the unit and clean the filter screen behind the nozzle.

The hose won't spray after I refill the tanks. What should I do?
Air is probably trapped in the pump. Turn the cleaner on, lower the hose to the floor, and hold the trigger for up to 1 minute to prime the pump. If it still doesn't spray, call 1-800-944-9200 for service.

Why is no solution coming out?
Check whether the Wash/Rinse Selector is set to Rinse. Turn it to Wash to dispense solution.

Can I use the Spinscrub 50 on hard floors?
No. Using this carpet washer and its accessories on hard floors may scratch or damage them.

Which upholstery can I clean with it?
Only fabrics marked W or S/W. Do not clean fabrics marked S. If there is no code, get professional advice.

Do I need tools to assemble the cleaner?
Yes. You need a Phillips screwdriver to attach the upper handle with the two screws provided.

Do the motor bearings need oil?
No. The bearings have enough lubrication for the life of the motor, and adding lubricant could damage it.

What does the warranty cover?
A limited two-year warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for household use in the U.S., at U.S. Military Exchanges and in Canada. Commercial use is not covered.
