Power Acoustik Gothic 12 in GW-124 Details
The Power Acoustik Gothic GW-124 is a 12-inch car audio subwoofer from the Gothic line, designed and engineered in the USA. It is built for high power handling and deep bass, and its construction aims for reliability over long-term use. The manual covers the driver's design, how to build its enclosure, and wiring options. These details help installers and enthusiasts get predictable results from the driver.
The moving assembly uses a stitched cone/surround assembly. The composite fiber cone is mechanically fastened to the rubber surround, not just glued, which lowers the risk of separation during long excursions at high power. Power Acoustik also uses low tolerance joint adhesives throughout the driver, so bonded parts stay aligned and secure under heat and constant vibration.
A poly-cotton suspension spider works with the surround to center the voice coil and control its movement. The motor structure uses a maximum strength HD magnet together with a vented T-yoke back-plate. The vent lets air move through the motor, which helps cool the voice coil and reduces pressure buildup behind the dust cap during heavy use. A segmented PVC frame gasket seals the frame against the mounting baffle so air does not leak around the driver.
The manual's enclosure section gives starting points, not fixed rules. The right enclosure depends on amplifier power, vehicle type, placement and crossover settings. For this reason, Power Acoustik recommends having the subwoofer installed by an authorized Power Acoustik dealer, who can match the box to the vehicle and the rest of the system.
For a sealed enclosure, the minimum recommended net volume is 1.25 cu ft and the optimum is 1.50 cu ft. For a ported enclosure, the minimum volume is 2.00 cu ft with a 4" x 11" port tuned to 34 Hz. The optimum ported design uses 2.50 cu ft with a 4" x 13.75" port tuned to 30 Hz, which gives deeper low-frequency extension. All listed volumes include the space taken up by the port and the subwoofer itself.
Build all enclosures from 0.75" (3/4") material only. If possible, make the baffle 1.5" (1 1/2") thick and add 0.75" to the enclosure depth to keep the internal volume the same. The manual warns users not to change the recommended volume unless they also add a substantial amount of bracing, because panel flex and volume changes alter the box's response.
The manual suggests two optional improvements. First, coating the interior walls with fiberglass resin significantly improves the enclosure's seal. Second, a thin layer of poly-fill inside the box smooths out internal reflections and improves overall response.
The dual 4-ohm voice coils give flexible wiring. The manual includes configuration diagrams for the Power Acoustik RZR1-2500D monoblock amplifier showing 1 Ω, 2 Ω, 4 Ω and 8 Ω loads. For a single driver, wiring the coils in parallel gives 2 Ω and wiring them in series gives 8 Ω. The 4 Ω and 1 Ω options are typical of multi-subwoofer setups, so the final load can be matched to the amplifier's stable impedance range.
