Aprilaire 700M Humidifier Details
The Aprilaire 700M is a large fan-powered evaporative humidifier. It adds moisture to the warm, dry air from your heating system. Unlike bypass models, it has a built-in fan that pulls air through the Water Panel, so it does not need a bypass duct to the return. The humidifier does not heat the water. It uses heat from the furnace to evaporate the water, and the humidified air then travels through the home's ductwork.
When the control calls for humidity and the HVAC fan is running, water flows into a distribution tray with a synthetic fabric liner. The tray spreads water evenly over the top of the Water Panel through "V" openings, but only if the unit is mounted level. A scale control insert surrounds the panel and traps mineral deposits. A small, steady stream of water runs to the drain and flushes away most minerals. This also prevents problems from standing water.
All housing parts that touch water are non-metal, so they will not rust or corrode. An orifice sets the correct water flow. Do not use the saddle valve to adjust flow, because it is designed to be fully open or fully closed. Keep the humidifier out of any area where water could freeze. Do not install it where the blanked-off end of a cooling coil blocks airflow, or on ducts with horizontal airflow, because performance will drop.
The Manual Humidifier Control needs you to make seasonal adjustments. When outdoor temperatures are about to drop, lower the set point to prevent condensation. The manual suggests 45% RH at 40°F, 35% at 20°F, 25% at 0°F and 15% at -20°F. To estimate the current indoor RH, turn the knob slowly back and forth and listen for two clicks. The indoor humidity falls between those two points.
For wiring, do not connect the power cord to multispeed furnace blower motors or to motors other than 120 VAC. In those cases, use a Model 50 Current Sensing Relay wired into the 24 VAC control circuit. Do not wire the transformer into the furnace blower circuit. On downflow furnaces, the blower must keep running after a heat call ends so the control is not exposed to high heat. On heat pump systems, use hot water to make up for the cooler supply air.
Plan on yearly maintenance. Disconnect power and water, unlatch the cover, and tip out the evaporator assembly. Clean the distribution tray, soaking it in vinegar if deposits are stubborn. Install a new Water Panel 35 with the colored spot facing up. Inspect the feed tube, and flush the drain line under pressure. The drain line must slope downward the whole way. The in-line strainer and orifice also need regular inspection.
For summer, set the Manual Humidifier Control to OFF. Since the 700M has no bypass damper, no damper adjustment is needed. Indoor activities such as cooking, showering and drying clothes can push humidity too high even when the humidifier is off. If condensation stays on windows for several hours, ventilate the home. Keep fireplace dampers closed when not in use.
