Alpine KTP-445U Amplifier Details

The Alpine KTP-445U is a compact "Head Unit Power Pack" made to add real amplification to a factory or aftermarket head unit without a complicated installation. It is small enough to fit behind a dashboard or under a seat. It adds clean power to four speakers and offers several installation methods, so it works in many different vehicles.

Installation is flexible. Option A uses the included mounting brackets. You take the two bottom screws off each end panel, use them to fix the brackets, use the amplifier as a template to mark four holes, and secure it with self-tapping screws. Option B skips drilling. You pass cable ties through the mounting loops on the bottom panel and strap the unit to the vehicle frame or chassis.

The Input Signal Type switch lets the amplifier take either low-level RCA signals or speaker-level signals. With speaker-level inputs, you cut off the RCA jacks and wire the head unit's speaker outputs straight to the twisted-pair input wires. This makes the KTP-445U a good match for factory radios that have no preamp outputs.

When the amplifier is fed speaker-level signals, the REMOTE SENSING function detects the incoming audio and turns the amplifier on by itself, so you usually don't need a remote turn-on lead. Alpine notes that it may not work with every signal source. In that case, connect the remote lead to an accessory (ACC) power wire.

The Input Configuration switch picks 2-channel or 4-channel input. In 2CH mode, one stereo pair feeds all four outputs, which is useful when the head unit only has front outputs or when you run the amplifier in a bridged 2-channel output system. In that case, the manual requires the switch to be in the up position.

Gain setup follows a set procedure. Turn the amplifier gain to minimum, play a dynamic CD, and raise the head unit volume until the sound distorts, then back off one step. Next, raise the amplifier gain until distortion appears and reduce it slightly. With speaker-level inputs, Alpine recommends keeping both gain controls between minimum and the 9 o'clock position.

The manual includes a connection checklist for head units that lack a proper remote turn-on lead, whose power antenna lead only turns on in radio mode, or that use a 5 V logic or negative-trigger output. For these units, connect the remote lead to a switched ignition source protected by a 3 A fuse. An optional SPST switch lets the driver turn the amplifier off by hand, which prevents battery drain.

Noise prevention gets special attention. Ground the unit to a bare metal spot on the chassis and confirm continuity with the negative battery terminal. Ground all audio components to the same point to avoid ground loops, and keep power leads away from signal wiring. The Remote Out lead passes the turn-on signal to additional amplifiers for future expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Alpine KTP-445U Amplifier, and we answer them below.

How much power does the Alpine KTP-445U deliver?
It delivers 45 W RMS x 4 at 4 Ω or 2 Ω and 14.4 V, with less than 1% THD+N.

Can I connect the KTP-445U to a factory radio without RCA outputs?
Yes. Set the Input Signal Type switch to SPKR, cut off the RCA jacks, and connect the head unit's speaker outputs directly to the twisted-pair input wires.

Do I need to connect the remote turn-on lead?
With speaker-level inputs, usually not, because the REMOTE SENSING function turns the amp on automatically. If it does not work with your source, connect the Blue/White lead to an accessory (ACC) power wire.

What high pass filter frequencies are available?
The front and rear channels each have their own high pass filter that can be set to OFF (default), 60 Hz, 80 Hz or 120 Hz using two slide switches.

Can the KTP-445U be bridged?
Yes, it can be bridged for 2-channel output. The Input Configuration switch must be in the up (2CH) position for a bridged output system.

What fuse does the amplifier use?
The unit has one 15 A fuse. If you connect the battery lead directly to the battery, add a 15 A inline fuse as close as possible to the positive terminal.

Can I power the amp from the OEM radio circuit?
Yes, but only if that circuit's fuse is rated 15 A or higher. Otherwise, connect the battery lead directly to the battery with a 15 A fuse.

How should I set the gain?
Start with the gain at minimum. Raise the head unit volume until it distorts and back off one step, then raise the amp gain until distortion appears and reduce it slightly. With speaker-level inputs, keep the gain between minimum and the 9 o'clock position.

What if my head unit's power antenna lead only works in radio mode?
Connect the remote turn-on lead to a switched ignition source with a 3 A fuse placed as close as possible to the ignition tap. An optional SPST switch can be added for manual control.

What accessories are included?
Two mounting brackets, four M4 x 12 self-tapping screws, two cable ties, one input wire harness and one output/power wire harness.

How can I reduce noise in the system?
Keep the unit and its leads at least 10 cm from the car harness, keep power leads away from other wires, and ground all audio components to the same bare metal point on the chassis.

Can I add more amplifiers later?
Yes. The Blue/White Remote Out lead passes the head unit's turn-on signal through to turn on additional amplifiers.

What is the warranty period?
The limited warranty lasts one year from the date of the first consumer purchase and covers the original purchaser in the United States, Puerto Rico or Canada.
