CAT CJ1000DCP Car Jump Starter Details

The CAT CJ1000DCP is a professional power station that puts a jump starter, a tire compressor, an AC inverter, USB charging and an area light in one housing with a rubber grip handle. Everything is operated from a front control panel. There are separate buttons for the compressor, USB ports, AC outlet and area light, and a rotary Jump Starter Power Switch. Each button press makes a beep, and the unit turns itself off once every function is switched off.

The backlit LCD screen is the main user interface. It shows a four-bar Battery Status Icon, a voltage indicator, clamp icons, reverse polarity icons, alarm and fault icons, and icons for the jump starter, compressor and USB functions. During AC charging, the bars fill from bottom to top over and over. When the battery is completely drained, the empty icon flashes and the built-in low voltage protection shuts the unit down until it is recharged.

The jump-starting system is built around safety. The power switch only lets energy flow when the connections are correct, and it should stay in the OFF (0) position while you attach the clamps. If the clamps are reversed, the alarm and polarity icons flash and a continuous alarm sounds. If the switch is turned on with no battery connected, a two-second warning repeats every 10 seconds. Turning the switch on with reversed polarity permanently damages the unit.

On negative-grounded vehicles, the red clamp goes on the positive battery post and the black clamp goes on the chassis or engine block, away from the battery. When the jump starter icon flashes, the connection is correct, so you turn the switch on and crank the engine in short bursts. Afterwards, remove the black clamp first. Positive-ground vehicles use the mirror-image procedure. Turn the compressor off before jump-starting, because the two modes cannot run at the same time.

The compressor uses a Sure Fit® nozzle that screws onto valve stems, plus a nozzle adapter for balls and other inflatables. You set the target pressure with the + and – buttons, and holding a button speeds up the change. The setting stays in memory until you change it, which makes regular tire top-offs easy. Inflation stops automatically at the preset pressure. At higher pressures the motor may slow down for a while to keep itself from overheating.

The AC outlet shuts down automatically for low or high internal battery voltage, overheating, overload and short circuits, and each fault has its own flashing icons. It cannot run heat-producing appliances such as hair dryers, toasters and microwaves, and it should not be used with medical devices. Some laptops may not work with it. The USB ports supply power only, with no data transfer. A translucent blue ring around each port lights solid when active and flashes when there is a fault.

Maintenance is minimal. The sealed lead acid battery should last the service life of the unit, and there are no user-replaceable parts. Keep the unit upright and away from sunlight, heat and moisture, and clean it with a soft cloth dampened with mild detergent. The hose and adapter have their own storage compartments. The unit is not for boats, 6V or 24V systems, or frozen batteries, and the battery must be recycled at the end of its life.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the CAT CJ1000DCP Car Jump Starter, and we answer them below.

How long should I charge the CAT CJ1000DCP before using it for the first time?
The unit ships partially charged. Charge it for a full 40 hours right after you receive it, or until the Battery Status Icon shows 4 solid bars. You cannot overcharge it with the AC charging method.

How often should the unit be recharged?
Recharge it after each use and at least every 30 days when it is not in regular use. Lead acid batteries lose charge over time, and letting the battery stay discharged can damage it permanently and weaken jump-starting performance.

What is the peak current of the CJ1000DCP?
It delivers 1000A peak battery current and 500A instantaneous current at 12V DC.

Can I use this jump starter on 6V or 24V vehicles?
No. It is designed only for vehicles with a 12V DC battery system. It is also not approved for watercraft or marine use.

What happens if I connect the clamps with reverse polarity?
A continuous alarm sounds, and the Alarm Icon, the + and – signs and the Reverse Polarity Icons flash on the LCD screen. Do not turn on the Jump Starter Power Switch. Disconnect the clamps carefully and reconnect them with the correct polarity, because turning the switch on while the clamps are reversed causes permanent damage.

How should I crank the engine when jump-starting?
Once the clamps are connected properly and the switch is on, crank the engine in 5 to 6 second bursts until it starts. If it does not start after the recommended number of attempts, stop and have a qualified technician check the vehicle.

What is the maximum pressure of the built-in compressor?
The compressor can inflate up to 120 PSI. You can set the target pressure anywhere from 1 to 120 PSI with the + and – buttons, and the compressor stops automatically when it reaches that pressure.

How long can the compressor run continuously?
Do not run it continuously for more than about 10 minutes. After that, turn it off and let it cool for about 30 minutes before starting again. On a full charge it can fill up to 3 average-sized tires.

Does the compressor remember my last pressure setting?
Yes. The unit stores the last PSI value you selected until you change it, which makes it easy to top off your vehicle's tires regularly.

What can I power from the 120V AC outlet?
The outlet supplies up to 200 watts continuous with a modified sine wave. It cannot run heat-producing appliances such as hair dryers, toasters or microwave ovens, and it should not be used with medical devices. Some laptops may not work with it.

How much current do the USB ports supply?
The four USB ports supply 5V each and 6.2A in total. The two left ports share 3.1A and the two right ports share 3.1A. The ports provide power only and do not support data transfer.

What does a flashing blue ring around the USB ports mean?
It means the unit has detected a fault, such as overheating, low battery voltage, overload or a short circuit. Disconnect the device, turn the USB ports off, check the battery charge, let the unit cool and make sure each pair of ports draws no more than 3.1A.

Can the internal battery be replaced by the user?
No. The unit has no user-replaceable parts, and the battery is designed to last the service life of the unit. Contact the manufacturer for service. At the end of its life, the sealed lead acid battery must be recycled.

What warranty comes with the CAT CJ1000DCP?
The product has a one-year home use warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of retail purchase. It does not cover accessories, bulbs, fuses, batteries, normal wear, misuse or commercial use.
