Gigabyte Z790 Eagle AX Motherboard Details

The Gigabyte Z790 Eagle AX box includes the motherboard, the user's manual, two Wi-Fi antennas, two SATA cables, M.2 screws, and one pack of thick and thin M.2 rubber pads. Use the thick black pad under double-sided M.2 SSDs. For single-sided drives, stick the thin gray pad onto the thick one first. Only the M2A_CPU slot has a heatsink. Remove the protective film from its thermal pad and from the bottom of the heatsink before you put it back.

Memory is split into two channels: DDR5_A1/A2 and DDR5_B1/B2. With two modules, Gigabyte recommends the DDR5_A2 and DDR5_B2 sockets. A single module should also go in DDR5_A2 or DDR5_B2, although Dual Channel mode can't run with only one module. For best results, use matched modules of the same capacity, brand, speed and chips. The BIOS detects memory specifications automatically.

Each of the six fan and pump headers is 4-pin and rated at 2A and 24W. SYS_FAN2B has no Sense pin, and SYS_FAN2A and SYS_FAN2B share synchronized settings. The two addressable LED headers take standard 5050 strips rated up to 5A (5V), with a maximum of 1000 LEDs. Connect the strip's triangle-marked power pin to Pin 1, because a wrong connection can damage the strip.

Gigabyte recommends a power supply of 500W or greater. If the 8-pin 12V CPU power connector isn't connected, the computer won't start. Four status LEDs (CPU, DRAM, VGA and BOOT) help with troubleshooting. A lit CPU, DRAM or VGA LED means that device isn't working normally. A lit BOOT LED means the system hasn't reached the operating system yet.

Q-Flash Plus updates the BIOS while the system is in the S5 shutdown state. Save the BIOS file to a USB drive, plug it into the dedicated USB 2.0 port on the back panel, and press the button. The QFLED blinks while flashing and stops when it's done. The RST_SW button and RST jumper can be remapped to other tasks with the BIOS "RST_SW (MULTIKEY)" setting.

During POST, press Delete to open BIOS Setup, F12 to open the one-time Boot Menu, or End to go straight to Q-Flash. You can reset the CMOS by shorting the CLR_CMOS pins, or by removing the CR2032 3V coin battery for one minute. Afterwards, select Load Optimized Defaults in BIOS Setup.

The LAN port has two LEDs. The speed LED is orange at 2.5 Gbps, green at 1 Gbps, and off at 100 Mbps. The activity LED blinks while data is moving. The HDMI port supports Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio and 7.1-channel LPCM at up to 192KHz/24bit. To set up 7.1-channel audio, assign the front panel line out as the side speakers in the audio software.

To install Windows on a RAID volume, you first need to load the Intel RST VMD Controller driver from a USB drive during setup. Note that an M.2 PCIe SSD can't be in the same RAID array as an M.2 SATA SSD or a SATA hard drive. After Windows is installed, GIGABYTE Control Center offers to download the drivers, as long as Gigabyte Utilities Downloader is enabled in the BIOS.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Gigabyte Z790 Eagle AX Motherboard, and we answer them below.

What is the difference between the Z790 Eagle AX and the Z790 Eagle?
The Z790 Eagle AX adds a Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 module, two antenna connectors on the back panel, and two antennas in the box. The standard Z790 Eagle doesn't have wireless.

Which wireless module does my board use?
It depends on the PCB revision. Revision 1.0 uses the Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211, and revision 1.1 uses the Realtek RTL8852CE. You can find the revision printed as "REV: X.X" in the top left corner of the board.

What is the maximum memory capacity and speed?
The board supports up to 256 GB of DDR5 across four DIMMs, with up to 64 GB per DIMM. With 14th or 13th Gen Core i9/i7 processors, it runs at up to 5600 MT/s. Other supported CPUs are limited to 4800 MT/s.

Which slots should I use for two memory modules?
Install them in DDR5_A2 and DDR5_B2 to run in Dual Channel mode.

Which M.2 slot supports M.2 SATA SSDs?
Only M2M_SB accepts M.2 SATA SSDs. M2A_CPU and M2P_SB support PCIe x4 and x2 SSDs only.

Can I install a 22110 M.2 SSD?
Yes, but only in the M2A_CPU slot. The other two slots support 2280 drives.

How do I update the BIOS without a CPU or memory installed?
Use Q-Flash Plus. Save the BIOS file to a USB drive and plug it into the dedicated Q-Flash Plus USB port. With the system in the S5 shutdown state, press the QFLASH_PLUS button and wait until the QFLED stops blinking.

How do I enter the BIOS or the Boot Menu?
During POST, press Delete to open BIOS Setup, F12 to open the Boot Menu, or End to open Q-Flash directly.

How do I clear the CMOS?
Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord. Then either short the CLR_CMOS pins for a few seconds with a metal object, or remove the CR2032 battery for one minute. Afterwards, load optimized defaults in the BIOS.

What power supply is recommended?
Use a power supply of 500W or greater. Connect the 24-pin ATX connector and the 8-pin 12V CPU power connectors. The system won't start if the 12V connector is missing.

What do the status LEDs mean?
A lit CPU, DRAM or VGA LED means that component isn't working normally. A lit BOOT LED means the system hasn't entered the operating system yet.

How many addressable LEDs can each header drive?
Each D_LED header supports a standard 5050 addressable strip with up to 1000 LEDs, rated at a maximum of 5A at 5V.

Does the board support Thunderbolt?
Yes, through a GIGABYTE Thunderbolt add-in card connected to the THB_C1 and THB_C2 headers.

Which operating systems are supported?
Windows 11 64-bit and Windows 10 64-bit.
